Elisha Trowbridge  (1890)

16. Elisha Trowbridge^32,33 was born on 4 Sep 1839 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.³⁴ He was baptized on 14 Oct 1839 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.³⁵ He was christened in 1872 in Salisbury.³⁶ He died on 5 Feb 1919 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.³² He was buried in Feb 1919 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He signed a will on 28 Feb 1919 in Salisbury PC.³⁷ He was a Shepherd and Ag. Lab.. He was Baptist from 1872.³⁸ Very little is known about Elisha's early life, the 1851 census list him as plough-boy. Baptised in the Baptist Church Bowerchalke, 1872. Part of the little information we have of Elisha's own family comes from the Bowerchalke School Log book. Charles's son, Maurice Trowbridge, remembered his grandfather, Elisha, mostly by one or two isolated instances. As a small boy he was taken to see him when he had fallen off a hayrick, and was in bed with bandages and a broken arm. Later, on one of the few times he spent a holiday in Bowerchalke, he used to go out to the road to see him come down from the downs twice a day to water the sheep looking every inch a shepherd---black cloak, wide-brimmed hat and complete with the shepherd's crook. With his beard and rather piercing blue eyes he looked as he had always imagined an old testament prophet would look. Indeed Elisha was a very devout man and by all accounts his only reading was the bible; there is a photograph that has survived, a studio portrait in the manner of the day (c.1890) showing Elisha wearing his Sunday suit, sitting on an upright chair, his left hand resting on an open book (perhaps the bible). There is only one other photograph, a portrait of Elisha and his wife Eliza, probably taken a few years earlier. Elisha was a simple man of the country who could read the bible but, apparently, was unable to write his name. He was a chapel goer for many years as the Baptist Church list of members records: Elisha Trowbridge, Baptised by Mr Short (Baptist minister), Salisbury, 1872 Elisha Trowbridge, Translated to Heaven, 1919. Will: He left a will in which his effects were bequeathed equally to his four children and at probate his estate was valued at £155 Elisha Trowbridge and Eliza Shergold were married on 10 Nov 1866 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.³⁹

17. Eliza Shergold was born in 1844 in Broadchalk, Wiltshire. She died on 22 May 1907 in 8 Woodminton Cottages, Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.⁴⁰ She was buried on 27 May 1907 in Parish Church, Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. Children were:

	i.	Henry Trowbridge was born about 1867 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He was buried in 1952 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He died in Nov 1952 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He was an Ag. Lab. Birth: Census 1871 Bowerchalke Marr: Indexes PRO:  Wilton, 5a,452 Dec 1889. Death: MI Bowerchalke Churchyard. Known as Harry
	ii.	Ellen Trowbridge was baptized on 18 Mar 1869 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. She was born in 1869 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. She was christened in 1902 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.41 She died before 1940. Birth: Census 1871 Bowerchalke.
	iii.	Morgan Trowbridge was born in 1871 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He died about 1939 in Patcham, Sussex. He was buried in Burgess Hill, Sussex. BIRTH: Census, Bowerchalke, 1871 Moved to Susssex soon after marriage
